![]() ![]() Gilcrest Sheep
Gilcrest Farms chose Wiltipoll sheep, a breed developed from the British Whiltshire Horned sheep, as the basis of their herd for three very special reasons.
Naturally shedding their wool annually there is no need for shearing or even tail docking.
They are naturally lice and flystrike resistant removing the need for chemicals or painful animal husbandry practices like crutching or mulesing usually associated with wool breeds.
They are able to produce heavy lambs without laying down fat and so provide well muscled, very lean and exceptionally tasty meat.
Then, based on the advantages of cross breeding found from the cattle breeding program, Gilcrest Farms carried the practice across to their sheep. The breed they selected to cross into their flock was the South African Dorper sheep, again for very special reasons.
Like the Whiltipol, they are naturally self shedding as well as lice and flystrike resistant and so offer the same advantages.
They are renowned for being voracious feeders eating weeds as readily as grasses and so allowing us to maintain weed free pastures without need for herbicides or chemicals.
Again, like the Whiltipol, they are well known for their mothering characteristics and tendency to produce twins..
