Gilcrest Cattle

The breeding plan

In the late 1990's the family became convinced of the advantages of breeding quality crossbred, or hybrid, cattle with their general heavier weights, better quality meat and greater overall health.  To this end, and after extensive research, it was decided to aim at the production of five way crosses;
The base stock being the two commercial herds of Murray Grey and Hereford females, breeds with proven characteristics.
Establish a stud breeding programme using South Devons, a breed well renowned for milk production, mothering and well marbled meat.  The aim to use these animals to improve the general meat quality of the base herds and to turn off heavier animals from the increased milk production and mothering traits of the their crossbred mothers.
Infuse Angus and Shorthorn genetics into the overall herd as well as Murray Grey and Hereford crossed into the individual herds by buying in registered bulls.
Produce quality composite animals for sale to commercial breeders by using the bought in stud bulls with registered females from the South Devon herd.
Implementation of the plan was achieved by establiahing and maintaining the South Devon stud herd and stud bulls on the Lindesforn property and moving bulls to the Leura Hills property only when they were required to work there.

The Aim

Gilcrest Farms' aim is to produce only high quality, grass fed, commercial hybrid cattle grazed only on  chemical free pastures.

As a result of its breeding programme Gilcrest Farms  also offers from from time to highly bred composite animals for use by commercial breeders  intent on improving the overall quality and viability of their herds.
